Democracy

Children at Manor Park have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a Junior Leadership Team who meet half termly to discuss issues raised by pupils in their class. The team has its own budget and is able to genuinely effect change within the school. All members of the JLT are elected by their peers and have to campaign for votes!

Children have an annual questionnaire with which they are able to put forward their views about the school and are constantly involved in pupil voice to help us evaluate their learning and implement changes they feel should happen.

Children are taught about the Royal Family and as a school we acknowledge Royal Special Occasions such as weddings, births and special birthdays.

We also have daily news available to the children through our picture news display boards which are utilised on a daily basis and for our school assemblies. Children are free to read these and leave comments and post-it-notes about their views and opinions and are encouraged daily to listen to the news and talk about what they have learned or found interesting to their class in a safe and stimulating environment.

The Rule of Law

Our school rules and rights are the backbone of our school community. Children are taught how these guide us to make great behaviour and learning choices for ourselves and for the school community. Children are aware of our behaviour system and always strive to end the day on gold.

We have a clearly structured behaviour policy, which all stakeholders understand and follow. The behaviour systems are supported by our SOAR displays, British Values posters and class rules in each classroom which remind the children of the high expectations constantly. At Manor Park, pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

At Manor Park, we commence each school year by creating class rules and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the class rules and have a good knowledge of the British Values which they use to help them make the class rules collaboratively.

We also have strong links with the local community and are fortunate to have regular visits from the local police and fire service. We always strive to deliver the highest quality assembles to reinforce the British Values and throughout our broad and creative curriculum. In addition to this, we are very fortunate to run our own careers day fair where the children find out all about different careers and how people help us in their daily lives. They have wonderful opportunities to ask their own questions and find out about the law and local communities.

Individual Liberty

At Manor Park, all children are aware of the importance of rules, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, rules are to be followed, respected and protect us. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils feel safe and confident to share their thoughts and opinions in a respectful and polite manner and feel happy to ask questions - no question is a silly question!  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons where we record collaborative and individual pieces of work in our SOAR books. All children are given equal opportunities and freedom of choice when participating in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and Manor Park University activities.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Manor Park is a wonderfully diverse school with great cultural diversity. We actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures on a daily basis. Religious Education lessons and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of acceptance and respect for others. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. As a school we celebrate Diwali, Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year, Hanukah, Ramadan and Eid. Our RE and collective worship teaching reinforces this.  Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths. We also encourage languages and teach French throughout the school. In our Early years, children are introduced to different ways to say hello in different languages. They thoroughly enjoy contributing and teaching their peers how to say hello in their own home language. This is also reinforced through our wonderful vibrant displays and creative curriculum.

 In 2020 we all worked together to create a wonderful memorial for Remembrance day. Stones of all sizes and variations were collected by each member of the school, designed and decorated by each pupil to create a beautiful memorial in the front courtyard as a wonderful focal point for our two minutes’ silence- a time when we remembered and reflected on the brave people that died for us during WW1 and WW2.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values at Manor Park. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. This is taught as part of our PSHE curriculum but also throughout all of our subjects and Religious Education lessons, which promote the importance of mutual respect and allow children the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the wider world and community. As a school we ensure our children play active roles in supporting the community and local area through raised awareness, donations and charity. We believe that being different is wonderful and makes us special and unique and no matter who you are or where you are from, we should always respect one another.
