Welcome to Year 2!

Year Two is part of the ‘Lower Phase’ in our school. Mrs Moore is the phase leader, and her role is to support the staff, children and families. If you have any questions, concerns or positive feedback then we would love to hear from you. You can contact Mrs Moore via the school office or by emailing admin@manorpark.coventry.sch.uk or on Class Dojo.

Year 2 is an important year at school as children build on the skills they developed in Year 1 and gain even more confidence in their learning. We aim to ensure that your child has a happy and engaging year, full of inspiring activities and enjoyable learning experiences, while also striving for high standards in learning, progress, and achievement. It’s a year full of new challenges, where children take greater responsibility for their work, explore new ideas with curiosity and enthusiasm, and develop a real love of learning.

We can’t wait for the year ahead and all the adventures our curriculum has in store! Across the year, children will dive into three stimulating topics: ‘Around the World’, where they’ll explore and compare different countries, cultures, and lifestyles; ‘Our City in the Spotlight’, discovering all about Coventry, our local area, and nearby towns and villages; and ‘Conquering Land and Sea’, where they’ll meet famous explorers and pioneers from history.

Learning will come alive through a variety of hands-on trips and unforgettable WOW events: a medieval adventure at Warwick Castle, exploring Coventry’s rich history at the Herbert Art Gallery and Transport Museum, and a vibrant India Day complete with dressing up, dancing, and tasting delicious foods! These experiences are designed to inspire, delight, and ignite a love of learning every step of the way.

As a team, we love celebrating every success, big or small, and we’re right there to guide and support pupils through any challenges they may encounter. Our SOAR values are woven into everything we do, helping children develop strong personal qualities and a positive mindset. By the end of the year, they’ll be well-prepared, focused, and excited for the transition into Year 3 — ready to take on new challenges with pride and resilience.

If you ever have any questions or want to chat with your child’s class teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — you can contact us through the school office or send a message via Class Dojo. We’re always happy to help! By working together, we can make sure your child has a fantastic, successful and enjoyable time in Year 2.

Early Reading at Manor Park

At Manor Park, we place a high priority on early reading and phonics and we work hard to develop a love of reading throughout the school. It is widely accepted that reading is one of the most powerful and important skills a child can learn and is often a predictor for early success. We recognise the powerful impact that parents have on their children and their child’s education and this is why we thoroughly appreciate you working alongside us throughout your child’s reading journey. Year 2 children each have a login, which will be shared with you, to access hundreds of exciting Oxford Reading Buddy books to encourage lots of reading at home. We also offer RWInc e-books so that you can support your child's reading at home, linked to what is being taught at school in phonics. Many children will be ready to start Accelerated Reader once they have completed the RWI programme and are proficient, fluent readers, where children can read longer chapter books and take exciting quizzes on what they have read. Children are also encouraged to read for pleasure, taking home a library book weekly from our Big Red Library Bus.
